Gunshots celebrating “independence” were heard across Kabul after the Pentagon and the Taliban separately confirmed troops from the United States had left Afghanistan.

“Tonight at 12.00 Afghanistan time, the remaining American troops left Kabul airport and our country gained complete independence,” said the Taliban’s chief spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid.

The Pentagon itself said the last flight had departed at the last minute Monday, August 30, 2021 evening. All US military personnel are outside Afghanistan.
AFP reporters in the city heard celebratory gunfire from several Taliban checkpoints. The cheers of the Taliban fighters guarding the security post in the green zone were also heard.
“We are making history again,” tweeted senior Taliban official Anas Haqqani.
“I am very happy that, after 20 years of jihad, sacrifice and hardship, I have the pride to see this historic moment,” he said.
Haqqani also urged Taliban fighters to stop celebratory fire to ensure no civilians were injured. Another Taliban spokesman, Bilal Karimi said the Taliban were very happy with the departure of US troops.
“All American troops have left Afghanistan, we are very happy. You can hear the celebratory shots.”
Earlier, the last US military aircraft officially left Kabul airport, Afghanistan. The last flight of the military aircraft also marked the end of the US evacuation process for its citizens and Afghans from the Taliban group.
