Terkini.id, Jakarta – The word corruptors is too subtle, Quraish Shihab: call them thieves! Questioning the name for the corruptors, Muslim scholar Muhammad Quraish Shihab firmly refused to attach the label ‘corruptor’ to the perpetrators of corruption. According to him, the thief is a proper name for the perpetrators of corruption rather than corrupt.

“(The term) corruptor is too subtle. They deserve to be called thieves,” said Quraish Shihab as quoted from the official website of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) Online via IDN Times, Sunday, August 29, 2021.

NU took this statement from the interview material of Quraish Shihab and his daughter Najwa Shihab from the Shihab and Shihab programs. Quraish Shihab admits that he is surprised that poor people who take what is not their right are called thieves.

“Why do our officials or employees call them corrupt? In fact, he is a thief,” he added.

He added that corruptors often have no shame despite wearing the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) orange vest. In addition, many facts prove that corruptors are still walking around and laughing while serving their sentence.

“So, the point is that corruptors should be shamed because they have no shame,” he appealed.

So, is it enough for corruptors to just be sentenced to prison?

Corruptors will be deterred if they are impoverished

According to Quraish Shihab, the perpetrators of corruption only realized when their wealth was confiscated by the state. He also supports the concept that corruptors must be impoverished, it is not enough to just return what has been stolen.

If they are not impoverished, it is certain that those convicted of corruption cases can still benefit from their invested assets.

“Let’s say (the proceeds of corruption) are invested in the bank, right there is profit,” said the author of Tafsir Al-Misbah.

“So the profits obtained, even though they are not corruption, should also be taken so that he becomes poor,” continued Quraish Shihab.

All assets collected from corrupt activities are haram

Quraish Shihab reminded, the wealth collected from acts of corruption is haram and bad. So, if given to children or families, it can have a bad impact on their character.

He also told of a mother who was blessed with successful children. When asked what the secret was, the mother replied that she had never once fed her child unlawfully.

“The Prophet said, every meat that grows from haram food, then hell is the place,” explained Quraish Shihab.

He views that one of the important factors to be promoted in society is the role of wives and children. Families are not just encouraging husbands to avoid corruption. Furthermore, that family member must persuade other family members not to commit such unlawful acts.

According to Quraish Shihab, other family members who do not know they are living from the proceeds of corruption will not be burdened by God.

“However, parents are obliged to find out any income that is more than what their child earns. If the father or mother sees that their child has advantages, he must ask where the source is. The wife is like that too, if she knows her husband’s salary is only so limited,” he added.

According to Quraish Shihab, by knowing a clear source of income, family members will be more comfortable.
